Kleenco utilizes naturally-occurring micro-organisms in Meout Stain Digester. The specific strains found in our enzyme products are Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus Licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus pumilus.

 

Organisms in the genus Bacillus are isolated from the soil and decaying plant and leaf matter. These specially-selected bacteria produce enzymes that break apart sugars, fats and proteins present in waste to create energy and materials for their own growth.

 

All of these organisms are classified as completely safe around humans and animals. They are recognized by the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) as Biosafety level 1 bacteria. The US Centers for Disease Control publishes Biosafety guidelines. Biosafety level 1 is described in the BMBL Reference manual as follows:

 

“BIOSAFETY 1 is suitable for work involving well-characterized agents not known to cause disease in healthy adult humans, and minimal potential hazard to laboratory personnel and the environment” (Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 3rd Edition, March 1993).

 

The safety of these organisms is further highlighted by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration in a final ruling which stated, in part, “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is affirming that carbohydrase enzyme preparations derived from either Bacillus subtilis or B. amyloliquefaciens are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as direct food ingredients.”

 

In explaining this decision, they further state (part IV Section B. Corroborating Evidence of Safety),  “Enzymes, including carbohydrase and protease enzymes in the enzyme preparations that are subject of this document, are naturally occurring proteins that are ubiquitous in living organisms,” and “Enzymes derived from microorganisms have been used as components of foods that have been safely consumed as part of the diet throughout human history”  (Federal Register: April 23, 1999, Volume 64, Number 78, Docket No. 84G-0257).

 

Stable

 

The above-mentioned micro-organisms are aerobic spore-forming bacteria. This means they have an amazing ability to stop the normal, vegetative growth cycle when conditions become unfavorable (for example, the food runs out). The structure of the spore is shown in the illustration to the right. These spores are extremely resistant to just about anything you could mention. Freeze them, put them in a vacuum, expose them to high levels of UV or ionizing radiation, treat them with bleach, phenol, formaldehyde, boil them for hours, and they’ll still survive.

 

Such stability allows this product to be shipped long distances in any weather condition and stored for extended periods of time without special handling. Rapid Germination and Outgrowth

 

Although shipped in a dormant state Meout Bacterial Enzymes retain an alert sensory mechanism that allows them to monitor their environment and respond to favorable conditions by germinating within minutes of exposure to specific germinants. This germination response consists of a complex series of biochemical events that result in the breaking of the dormant state and resumption of vegetative growth. The efficacy of this rapid germination is demonstrated just one minute from exposure to just 1 mM alanine (an amino acid).

 

Faster germination and outgrowth produces superior stain-removal results as the micro-organisms instantly release enzymes that catalyse the fundamental biochemical reaction that breaks apart organic stains and soils.

 

Synergistic Enzymatic Activity

 

Meout Stain Digester is formulated with micro-organisms that produce a synergistic combination of the following enzymes, protease, amylase, lipase, esterase, cellulase, and xylanase. Enzymes work like a key on a lock to break down large protein molecules into basic amino acids that are then easily removed from stained substrates.

 

Technically, all enzymes are organic catalysts that speed up reactions by lowering energies of activation. Most enzymes are stereo-selective, acting on a single substrate.

 

Because of the stereo selectivity of enzymes, it is important that stain-removal products be formulated with a diverse population of non-pathogenic bacteria capable of producing all enzymes necessary to catabolize all potential staining material.

 

The Meout enzyme combination is effective in breaking down protein, starch, carbohydrates, fats, grease and plant material. These macromolecules are the building blocks of food, soils, feces, vomit and other tenacious stains and soils. The specific activity of each enzyme is as follows:

 

 

  • Amylase – Incorporated to remove starch-containing stains, e.g. from pasta, chocolate, gravy and baby food. This enzyme hydrolyzes gelatinized starch rapidly, breaking it down into water-soluble molecules which are then completely removed by microbial action. Even tenacious stains release their grip from all types of fabric and carpet textiles. It is also effective in removing glue-like build-ups of stains and soils from hard surfaces.
  • Xylanase – Added to enhance the "hand" (softness) of fabric and carpet textiles, and eliminate the stiffness associated with harsh cleaning products and techniques.
  • Lipase / Esterase – Used to remove fat-containing stains such as those resulting from frying fats, salad oils, butter, fat-based sauces, soups, human sebum and certain cosmetics such as lipstick. Promotes rapid hydrolysis of a wide variety of triglycerides.
  • Protease – Selected for its ability to remove protein-based stains, e.g. grass, blood, mucus, feces and various foods such as egg and gravy. Rapid hydrolyzing activity dissolves peptide bonds within protein molecules so that concentrated non-pathogenic bacteria can safely digest them.

 

 

Bio-Active –

 

Bacterial enzymes are bio-active; this means no outside energy source is needed for stain removal. The energy needed is produced when the enzymes break apart the substrate molecules, releasing the stored energy. No scrubbing or external heat is needed for this product to work.

 

Excessive rubbing or scrubbing damages fibers or protective finishes removes color and may spread the stain. Hot water or external heat sources may actually set stains. Being completely natural, Enzyme Stain Digester is much safer to use because no harsh, poisonous or flammable materials are encountered.

 

Concentrated –

 

The efficacy or rate at which organic stains are removed from fabric or carpeting by microorganisms depends on numerous factors including nutrients, temperature, pH, doubling time and concentration of bacteria in the initial dose.

 

Meout Enzyme Stain Digester is highly efficient, with superior stain- removing performance. Each gallon of solution contains 200 billion bacteria. The doubling time for Bacillus subtilis is 30 minutes.

 

This means that once the bacteria have gone from a vegetative to an active state, each cell can grow from a single entity to a colony of over 1,000,000 in just 8 to 12 hours.

 

When properly applied, this product can remove a deeply-penetrated diarrhea feces stain from carpeting in as little as eight hours.
